National Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (PN-BSE)
How the platform started
Burkina Faso’s National Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (PN-BSE) was developed following a rapid national review of existing science, policy and practice initiatives. This assessment highlighted the need for a formal, inclusive mechanism to better connect biodiversity and ecosystem service knowledge with national decision-making and to strengthen coordination across sectors.
Where things stand now
The PN-BSE was formally established in March 2025 through a ministerial decree issued by the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Sanitation. The platform brings together universities, research centres, government ministries, the Transitional Legislative Assembly, civil society organisations and representatives of local communities. It now serves as Burkina Faso’s national science–policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Formalisation and legal status
The PN-BSE is fully institutionalised through a ministerial decree, which defines its mandate, membership, governance arrangements and operating procedures. The plenary meets at least once a year and is chaired by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Sanitation.

Key successes and achievements
The platform became operational with the first national plenary session held in April 2025. Since then, members have jointly developed a three-year action plan, alongside a resource mobilisation strategy and an advocacy strategy to support the platform’s long-term effectiveness. These milestones have established a clear mandate, governance structure and shared priorities for action.
