CABES at the Second Africa Climate Summit: Advancing Biodiversity and Climate Resilience in the Horn of Africa

The Second Africa Climate Summit, held from 8–10 September 2025 in Addis Ababa, convened African leaders, policymakers, researchers, and international partners under the theme “Accelerating Global Climate Solutions: Financing for Africa’s Resilient and Green Development.”

The Horn of Africa Regional Environment Center and Network (HoAREC&N) Consortium of CABES project made a strong contribution to the summit through its strategic side event and pavilion titled “Greening Borders, Restoring Future: Nature-Based Solutions for a Resilient Horn.”

At the side event, distinguished panelists explored key sub-themes, including:

  • From Green Legacy to Climate Leadership: Scaling Ethiopia’s Green Movement
  • Integrated Land Use and Cross-Border Ecosystem Restoration
  • Botanic Gardens as Climate Labs and Research Platforms
  • Bridging the Climate Finance Gap

Meanwhile, the Horn of Africa Pavilion became a vibrant hub for dialogue and exchange, featuring exhibitions and discussions on sustainable energy transitions, climate migration, transboundary nature-based solutions, and innovative financing models.

The summit also provided a platform to highlight the CABES project (Capacity Development for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services). CABES interventions showcased the importance of strengthening science-policy-practice interfaces across Africa. Notably, SPIBES MSc students of the CABES project actively participated in sessions, underlining the project’s role in building the next generation of African climate and biodiversity leaders.

Through its engagement, HoAREC&N reinforced the Horn of Africa’s leadership in advancing regional cooperation, promoting nature-based solutions, and mobilizing climate finance—critical steps toward a resilient and sustainable future for Africa.
